Behind Stories of Our Heritage
by David Kam (he/him)
This one’s straight from the heart.
Lately I’ve been asking my parents a lot about their childhood. What they remember of it. What their parents and their grandparents were like. Every time I asked, I would get transported to a different moment of their lives.
Through their stories, I understand and discover my own. I cherish these meaningful exchanges with my parents as we remain apart and whilst they continue to navigate lockdown back in Malaysia.
This kampaign may be focused on honouring the East & Southeast Asian (ESEA) heritage, but I hope that it encourages ALL of us to take a moment and (re)connect with those closest to us more deeply beyond the daily conversations.
Maybe in the act of storytelling, we can collectively begin to remember. A practice of collective wellness, knowing that the sharing of our truths are gifts in themselves. A way of deeply knowing ourselves through knowing the people we love.
Stories of Our Heritage has truly been a project co-created by the people closest to me and I wouldn’t have asked for it to be any other way.
Thank you Laura, Lauren, Justine and Maria for supporting the creation of this kampaign. Also to besea.n for instigating this process by inviting us to be a part of UK’s first ever ESEA Heritage Month. And always Wayne for being my anchor through it all.
Will you join me in this journey?
Stay tuned for updates @kindredpacket and please do share with particularly any ESEA friends within your circles.🧧
To take part in our kampaign, you can submit your story here.
