Lazy Susan

I’ve always thought of it as a beautiful convenient invention. This giant circular dish that anchors most dinner tables at Chinese restaurants back in Malaysia. I remember playfully spinning food away from my brothers and them doing the same when we were younger. It used to feel so big, as if I could never get to the other end!

As the youngest of four sons, I grew up watching my dad steering the Lazy Susan, patiently picking out food for us in sequence. Always my mum first, then us in order of where we sat. He picks out the best bits for us based on his assumption of our likings, and leaves himself with the bones, the bits and the corners. Over the years, we need a bigger table as our family expanded, and I witness this responsibility being passed onto my brothers since my dad retired. They each take turn to steer the table and do the same.

My dad is a quiet one, but always so generous. His love, I receive through these actions. No words needed.
